Hello Smithsonian Student Travelers,
I am so looking forward to meeting you all this summer in Iceland! We are setting out on what will surely be an amazing journey of exploration and adventure. Iceland has a truly remarkable history that I am excited to share with you through geology. Get excited to expand your knowledge and immerse yourself in a beautiful country and culture!
What originally sparked my interest in Iceland was the abundance of volcanoes. Iceland is home to over 30 active volcanoes with an average rate of one eruption roughly every four to five years. Geologically, the island is an absolute marvel, sculpted by glaciers and built up by volcanoes; its dramatic landscapes underscore the amazing natural processes that drive our planet Earth.
Some of you may feel as though your generation is being left to deal with the existential threats of climate change. On this trip, I hope to share with you how science is a toolbox that can give you the keys to work toward solutions to many of the problems facing our planet. When I lived in Iceland, I learned how science and technologies could be used to mitigate the threats from a warming planet; it’s a country that has been a forerunner in combating climate change and I am so thrilled that you will all be able to gain this experience to see it for yourselves.
To get the most out of the program, I encourage you to come prepared, pack for variable climates and weather, read up on a specific part of the trip that interests you so that you can really engage in the activity that day, and write down one intention or goal you have for the trip. Most importantly, bring an open mind, be inquisitive, and don’t forget to ask questions. This is your chance to learn, and Iceland is a natural textbook!
As a geologist who has traveled the world and seen my share of landscapes, I believe Iceland is one of the most spectacular natural wonders of the world. With so much wilderness packed into one small island, every car ride is an adventure, every view is worthy of a picture, and every landscape appears both dramatic and peaceful at the same time. I am so looking forward to our journey together and can’t wait to hear what you glean from this new experience.
Best,
Stephanie Grocke
